Cottage Celso
 Take
a farm holiday in a Tuscan cottage that is part of a
castle complex in Tuscany near Sovicille, Siena that
teems with ancient secrets from history. This lovely
cottage dates back to the 1100s long before the construction
of the famous Duomo and Palazzo Publico in Siena, Tuscany.
The main tower was originally constructed as a granary,
where local farmers stored their harvest while Sienese
sentries protected it from the Florentines. Later it
was transformed in the 16th century to a country estate.
A long line of popes of the Vatican stemmed from the
family who owned this estate. The same family commissioned
the building of a lovely private chapel nearby that
is still used today. The estate also owned vineyards
and huge ‘barriques’ still remain as reminders
in the basement of the larger tower.
The owners are still developing the vineyards to match
the size of the previous ones till today. The cottage
is a great farm holiday hideaway and is located at the
end of a winding country road in the beautiful natural
Tuscany countryside west of Siena. The area surrounding
the cottage has fields of sunflowers, grapes, wheat
fields and olive groves. As the guests explore the region,
they will find a sand road winding through the estate’s
fields, through the olive orchards, the riding ring
and vineyards leading to the cottages. The formal lovely
garden at the front of the castle is currently being
re-planted as a medieval garden. The west entrance gate
leads to the cottage and is separate from the owner’s
quarters. The guests will find a large swimming pool
through the gate that opens out to a terrace, pergola
and garden.
The castle complex has been restored over the past
twenty years, to its original glory with incredible
décor and accessories to suit the style of the
buildings. The smaller cottage can house two persons.
The cozy holiday cottage has exposed beam ceilings,
brick arches, parquet floors and antique Tuscan furniture.
The kitchen opens onto a large terrace that is pretty
with potted citrus trees and teak furniture. This big,
airy and convenient kitchen has all modern appliances,
lovely hand-made tiles, marble countertop, hand-made
wooden cabinets, fine ceramics and glassware. The living
and dining area offers hand-made luxurious sofa and
easy chairs upholstered in Italian fabrics. There are
CD player, CDs, satellite television, coffee-table books
and a wood burning stove. The bedroom has a double bed
and antique furniture and opens onto the panoramic terrace
and a lovely garden area. Fine linens are provided for
the beautifully-tiled bathroom with shower.
The estate produces wine, oil, cheese, honey, jam and
garden vegetables. The guests can try their hand at
original Tuscan recipes where all these ingredients
may be purchased for tasty Italian dinners throughout
a lovely stay. An English-language newspaper is delivered
daily. Occasionally, dinners are organized in the courtyard
of the castle for the guests. Alternatively, the estate
staff can prepare your meals, using the freshest estate-produced
ingredients, for an additional charge. Set amongst the
splendors and serenity of the Tuscany countryside, the
castle complex is conveniently near larger cities such
as Siena and Florence. The guests can take daily excursions
to see these wonderful cities and tourist sites and
then return to the peace and comfortable surroundings
of the lovely holiday cottage.
